To Tackle The GMAT You Need Outside Help!
To Tackle The GMAT You Need Outside Help!

Last time I posted a blog I was explaining my school selection methodology. Now with my b-school selection in mind, I checked their GMAT range. You can find them in the b-school profiles from Business Week. At that time (using data from the 2007 intake), they were as follows: London Business School Mean GMAT score 682 Median GMAT score 680 Middle 80% range GMAT from 620 to 740 HEC-Paris Mean GMAT score 657 Median GMAT score 655 Middle 80% range GMAT from 600 to 780 ...Read More

About The GMAT

Wall Street workers (who all want to hit the magic 750) spend months with their noses buried in prep books on the subway. Some forward-thinking undergrads take it while their brains are still fresh, years before they decide to apply to b-school. And Chinese women majoring in philosophy are among the world’s top performers.

Love it or loathe it, your GMAT score remains one of the first things a b-school will know about you.

r Created over 50 years ago, the GMAT exam is a specially designed standardised test for graduate business and management programmes. It is the only admissions test designed by business schools for business schools. You can sit the test at a GMAT testing centre in one of over 110 countries. When you complete the test, your score is valid for five years. The GMAT is owned and administered by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), an international non-profit association of business schools.

Just two thousand people took the test in 1953 when it was first introduced as a standardised test to aid differentiation between business school applicants. The GMAT is now taken by more than 200,000 people annually and is used by more than 1,900 schools worldwide. More than 4,700 programs currently use the GMAT as part of their selection process.

How is your GMAT score calculated?

The Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) yields four scores: Total, Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing Assessment. These are fixed scores and do not change. Click here to view a sample score report.

For each score you also receive a percentile rank. This is a percentage of examinees who scored below you based on the scores of the entire GMAT testing population for the most recent 3 year period. This score may vary from year to year.

Total, Verbal and Quantitative Scores:
  • These range from 0 to 60 on a fixed scale and can be compared across GMAT test administrations.
  • They measure different constructs however and cannot be compared to each other.
  • If you do not finish in the allotted time, you will still receive scores as long as you have worked on every section, however they are calculated based upon the number of questions answered therefore your score will decrease significantly with each unanswered question.
Analytical Writing Assessment Score:
  • Each response to the Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an argument sections are given two independent ratings.
  • Once both essays have been scored, the scores are averaged to provide an overall AWA score.
  • Scores for the AWA range from 0 to 6 in half-point intervals.
  • Writing scores are computed separately from the multiple-choice scores and have no effect on the Verbal, Quantitative, or Total scores.
