This week we interview Stefano Mosca, an Operational Excellence Professional at Italian food manufacturer Barilla, about his MBA at MIP (Politecnico di Milano) in Italy.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I grew up in the northern area of Milan. My father is an entrepreneur so I grew up in a business environment. I’ve also lived in Barcelona as an exchange student during my undergraduate degree and prior to starting my MBA I spent some time in New Zealand travelling in a small van and sailing.

When did you become interested in pursuing an MBA?
I decided to take an MBA after four years in a construction firm. I have a degree in Civil Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (MIP) and was working with a real estate developer. I was involved in the entire process of development planning, coordinating and controlling real estate projects. I wanted to change sector from real estate - a very specialized industry- to the fast moving consumer goods sector. I also wanted to increase my business knowledge and competencies, gain international exposure and to improve my career.

Why did you select MIP?
I was very satisfied with my university degree. The quality that I had tasted at university ensured my return. The MIP MBA has a very good price-quality relation. I was also near to my home and to my family.

Did MIP live up your expectations again?
I was highly satisfied because what I was looking for when I started the program is what I have achieved. During the programme I attended some innovation club activities and through my project work I am now working for the right company and in the right field.

What was your project work about and how did you get it?
It was due to the careers services at MIP MBA. I told them what my expectations were career-wise and they informed me of the Made in Barilla project with the Barilla Group (makers of world famous pasta and breads). On this project I have worked at home and abroad with so many different people. I went around collecting all the manufacturing best practices around the Barilla Group and produced some references and manuals and then deploying them within the manufacturing world to improve efficiency and operational results.

The Barilla offer was incredibly perfect for me because of the content and length of the project: six months rather than the typical three months. A longer project allowed me to have more visibility within the company, more productivity and to build a better relationship with the company. Supply chain was also exactly what I was looking for.

What is your current role at Barilla?
I am now working as the Operational Excellence Professional for Southern Europe operations working for continued improvement of our manufacturing projects.
