Reshmi Halder, a former technology analyst at Infosys, India’s largest IT company uncovered the essence of sustainability whilst on the University of Exeter MBA programme. She can’t stop telling people about it and is determined to spread the message of One Planet learning!
The 31-year-old Indian national moved from Kolkota where she was born to Hyderabad for work. Prior to joining the One Planet MBA, Reshmi worked with Infosys for more than five years as a technology analyst.
She joined the company right after graduating from Techno India Kolkota with a BTech. Information Technology and progressed to the role of team leader, maintaining communication lines, preparing reports and with managerial responsibilities.
Reshmi became more interested in sustainability when Infosys began implementing initiatives aimed at the local community in Hyderabad as part of its corporate social responsibility framework.
“Infosys was working on reducing carbon footprints so I was already interested in sustainability. When I learned about Exeter, I grabbed it. It was a great opportunity to learn both of the things I was interested in”, she says.
Reshmi also wanted to learn more business management skills in a diverse environment so she chose the UK business school with for its unique learning system. "This is why I wanted to go out of India and luckily everything fell onto my lap!” she says.
Fortunately for her, she has found all the modules on the programme useful and eye-opening: “We learned how sustainability could help companies thrive and these kinds of things surprised me. I did not expect that sustainability could come into finance and economics”.
Reshmi got the opportunity to delve deeper into the topic by working on sustainability finance models. She researched existing literature on the ‘greenness’ of UK high street banks with the aim of embedding sustainability into their day-to-day running. She found the Co-operative Bank to be the cleanest bank in the UK.
We asked Reshmi how she plans to take her One Planet learning forward in the short term and she told us that wherever she finds herself she will keep telling people about it. She has become an ambassador for all things sustainability!
