This was a poll of finalists and recent grads, but have things changed a few years later?

During January and February WikiJob.co.uk asked its readers whether MBAs are useful or useless.

The result: more respondents said that MBAs are useful, but only just. Of the 570 final-year undergrads and recent grads who responded, 51 per cent said that an MBA is useful while 49 per cent said that it’s useless.

“The benefits of an MBA are unclear to university graduates,” says WikiJob co-founder Chris Muktar. “Business schools could do more to promote the benefits to graduates.”

“MBAs are not seen as a necessity or even advantageous amongst a huge proportion of graduates,” he adds.

Professional qualifications such as the ACA or CFA are popular amongst graduates. How popular, exactly? Check out the latest reader poll on WikiJob.co.uk to find out.

There's some degree of irony in this. Most MBA students will do a stint at some stage studying marketing, and almost invariably that stint involves studying the attributes of a 'brand' - and what makes the brand successful. Surely it should therefore be of some concern that there seems an almost equal split about whether the MBA is useful or not? But, of course, there are all the usual methodological quibbles, such as 'how do you define useful?', 'is the MBA a unitary concept? what about MBAs especially in leadership or innovation?" - which MBA students, like me, are keen to use as a deflection from the real issue, perhaps.
