Top Chinese business school the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) is touring the US for the first time, to discuss finance careers in China with young professionals this week.

China's booming economy - the country has avereaged GDP growth of 10 per cent par annum over the last 30 years - is attracting more and more Americans to its shores in search of job and business opportunities.

In 2005 the number of Americans working in China - mostly in the megalopolises of Beijing and Shanghai - was estimated to be 110,000. Now, experts say, the population must have at least doubled.

SAIF is part of China's prestigious Jiao Tong University - think Harvard or Yale - and was established with the mission of training China's up-and-coming elite finance professionals. The Shanghai government part-funded the school as part of its efforts to earn the city the status of a global financial centre by 2015.

Shanghai investment bankers are now on base salaries of between US$60,000 and US$120,000. Though the city is not that much cheaper than New York, once you have a foot in the door the career prospects are better.

This is the first time SAIF has toured the US, and it will host three information sessions in in Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York to discuss the Chinese economy and finance careers in greater China. Since the MBA programme launched four years ago the school has welcomed several North American alumni who have gone on to successful careers in the country, including Devon Nixon (nephew of ex-US President Richard Nixon), who is currently an entrepreneur in the agricultural sector.

It will also be a chance to learn more about SAIF’s graduate finance programs and the opportunities to work in top finance institutions in China. The list of weekly guest speakers at SAIF reads like a who's who of top hedge fund, private equity, fund management and investment banking gurus.

Chinese finance institutions have grown in recent years with their combined profits accounting for nearly a third of the world market in 2011. Understanding the country's economic growth is important for those keen to explore careers in China. China’s new leaders have promised deep economic reform and there’s room for global minded executives!

Three of the Big Four banks - Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Bank of China - ranked in The Banker magazine's 2012 top five most profitable banks in the world. The fourth bank in the group is Agricultural Bank of China.

The Big Four are aggressively establishing branches all over the world and need fresh talent who can manage operations with an international outlook.

SAIF has great connections with organizations in China and last year placed 91.3 per cent of its MBA graduates in the finance industry.

Some of the most popular industries were domestic securities, venture capital and private equity, asset management, financial research, funds, joint venture securities and financial services.
