A hundred of London's techie young professionals and MBA hopefuls gathered at Google's London HQ yesterday to hear about the hidden game theory strategies that govern our every move, and get a peek of the offices of the firm most grads worldwide want to work for.
The evening was themed "Google, Gaming and Getting Ahead" and keynote speaker Professor Patrick McNutt of Manchester Business School gave an extensive rundown of how game theory strategies are deployed by everyone from tech firms to football teams to people hanging off cliffs.
Game theory is about making decisions using the best information available to you over a given time period. Prof McNutt's examples ranged from the iPhone-Android Alliance battle, to Chelsea versus Barcelona in the Champions League, to what you should do if you're hanging off a cliff and a buddy who you know to be a liar offers to help you up.
In the real world it's not always possible to get all the information you need about your competitors. However if you do head to business school to study game theory in depth, we reckon you'll make a lot of money from football bookies and also be a lot more Machiavellian in your professional life!
Finding out about getting a job at Google was obviously a big draw! Unlimited sushi and candy, colourful furniture and modern design. What's not to love about working at the world's most powerful tech firm? The super smart and personable Jane Murphy and Matt Mitro of Google's Dublin and London recruitment teams were on hand to explain career paths and job opportunities there, and gave useful advice on how to get your application noticed.
Manchester Business School, INSEAD and Duke University's Fuqua School of business supported the event, along with Bright Network, an elite, invite-only UK recruitment firm that offers its members access to one another as well as to career opportunities internationally.
