If you want to land an MBA job in consulting, an internship is a safe bet.

At McKinsey & Company, for example, summer associates almost always join the firm full-time, says a spokesperson.

That doesn’t mean it’s easy to get a spot on a top firm’s internship program.

But a summer associate scheme is an opportunity to experience the consulting sector’s peaks and troths.

“By the end of the summer, everyone should have a good sense of whether they enjoy the work and the people,” says the McKinsey spokesperson.

What’s more, interns aren’t saddled with drudge tasks. At McKinsey, they’re assigned to client engagement and work alongside full-time consultants.

“They are expected to own their work streams and contribute to problem-solving, exactly as they would as new full-time associates.”

It also pays well. At McKinsey, the 10-week internship yields $29,500 for an MBA, according to data from ManagementConsulted.com.

With that in mind, career information site Vault surveyed thousands of current and former consulting interns.

Vault’s Best Consulting Internships represent the highest-rated schemes among consulting firms.

Bain & Company toped the chart. The Boston-based firm hires around 100 interns for a duration of six to 12 weeks.

One Bain & Co intern said: “The best aspects were the personal development opportunities and the interesting work.”

“Travel was tough,” they added, “but the points and benefits — great dinners, fancy hotels — more than make up for it.”

CapTech Elevate, the tech-focused consultancy, and Cornerstone Research came second and third in Vault’s ranking, respectively.

“Great company culture, incredibly smart co-workers, realistic project experience,” said a CapTech Elevate intern.

Yet, others lambasted what they described as a lengthy on-boarding process. One said: “I did not like all the long hours spent in training. The training was also unorganized, as in we did not receive the right training at the right time.”

If you’re still after a consultancy internship in 2017, however, you’d do well to read Vault’s ranking.
