We chatted with Club President Ruchir Desai to find out about some the Club's activities and achievements. Ruchir has over seven years of experience in financial markets in Mumbai. After stints in equity sales and research, he was most recently Senior Analyst at HandsOnVentures, a mid-market private equity firm.
He signed up for Chinese University of Hong Kong full-time MBA in order to grow his finance career in Asia. The Finance Club is essential for building his network in the sector in Hong Kong.
What’s the aim of your club and how did you get involved?
Students from the MBA got together to form the club and elect club officers. It has been a good experience but organizing events for students has been very challenging. It's always good when we eventually get everyone together for an event but co-ordinating dates to fit peoples' schedules is tough!
The general aim of the club is to give students exposure to the finance world. Not every one on the CUHK MBA has this sort of opportunity and so we bring experts from the industry to meet with students. Students can learn from their experience and also keep on top of the issues in the finance industry.
Who are some of the exciting speakers you have had?
We've had speakers from equity research and we've also had top bankers. We had a speaker from Ernst and Young as well. Last month we had organized a senior banker but he cancelled because of issues with schedules.
I would like to work in either investment management or asset management so its been a good way of staying active in the industry even though I'm on a study break. This summer I'll be interning in an investment firm.
How many members does your club have?
There are about 55 of us and this is out of 90 full-time MBA students. Our members are an exciting mix of people - some of our members are also in the Marketing and Entrepreneurship clubs.
What other exciting activities does the club have planned?
We're at the end of the semester so there is no time left for activities. I'll be starting my summer internship and after that I'll be heading to Duke-Fuqua for a four-month exchange programme. I'm looking forward to experiencing the culture at a US School. I'm not going there for work opportunities because we know that North America is not in the best shape economically, but I think it will be good for improving my skills. I'm sure the new batch that comes in during August will have some exciting activities to kick off with!
