Business in Latin America - Duke Fuqua MBAs Take The Lead

Latin America is open for business and Duke Fuqua students are seizing the opportunity with help from a former U.S Ambassador to Venezuela!

A former U.S Ambassador to Venezuela is teaching students on Duke Fuquas's Daytime MBA about business in Latin America, and taking them on a trip to Brazil and Argentina to discover opportunities for themselves!

Latin American economies are thriving these days, and markets such as Brazil and Argentina look tempting. The region’s best companies are making double digit returns on equity and experiencing exponential growth in revenues.

Some fine examples include Chilean retailer Falabella, which in the past two decades has replicated its successful business model in Peru, Colombia and Argentina.

Brazilian Aircraft maker Embraer's strategy of sharing development risk with overseas partners from more mature markets in return for a share of the revenues has become the global standard in aeronautics.

Another example of success is Mexico’s Banco Compartamos who has made a name for itself as one of Latin America’s leading microfinanciers by lending to more than 14 million low income households that mainstream financial services providers had ignored.

These amazing opportunities are cushioned in a region that is increasingly receptive to foreign investment. In 2010 and 2011, Latin America attracted more foreign investment than Asia. Brazil has received a third of foreign investment into Latin America since 2003 and Chile leads the region in ease of doing business rankings.

Some of the hottest industries in Latin America are natural resources, energy, including alternative energy, automotive, aerospace and transport, communications, IT and life sciences.

The opportunities in the region cannot be denied and there seems to be plenty of room for MBAs since a study carried out by PriceWaterhouseCoopers for the World Economic Forum showed that companies based in Latin America’s largest economies are having difficulty filling jobs.

In about two weeks, 25 students from Duke Fuqua will head to Brazil and Argentina, two of the region’s most vibrant economies, on the Fuqua Global Academic Travel Experience(GATE). The trip is being led by former US Ambassador Patrick Duddy.

Duddy’s career spanned 30 years and he served in eight Latin American countries. He was the US Ambassador to Venezuela under both President George W. Bush and President Obama.

Upon Duddy’s retirement, he was one of the US Department of State’s most senior Latin American specialists with exceptionally broad experience in trade, energy, public affairs and crisis management.

In the lead up to the trip, Duddy has been teaching a weekly three-hour class which explores Latin America’s contemporary history and economics. Fuqua wants to give students the opportunity to learn about this dynamic region. The school also wants to develop stronger links with leaders within the region.

The class will visit Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Buenos Aires. Students will meet companies and government officials and explore the culture of the three cities.

International students make up 40 per cent of Duke Fuqua's Daytime MBA class, and there has been a growth in applications from students from Latin America.

Its Latin American club is very active and represents students from 14 countries in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. They host regular meet-ups to share their culture and experiences and all students on the MBA are welcome to join in. They even have a Happy Hour and an end of term get-together coming up!

Fuqua is also stepping up its efforts to include Brazil in the curriculum through a separate programme called the Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum. Students will have the opportunity to consult on projects with start-ups and multinationals in several different countries, including Brazil. In a region with fast-growing economies diverse trade partners, large markets and a very entrepreneurial spirit, there is surely a lot to be gained!

Diversity

The people or the students are without a doubt Duke's greatest asset. While all students are driven to succeed, they are also enthusiastic about a variety of hobbies. You run across a huge lot of diversity. It is the ideal example of a school with well-rounded students and the ideal balance of campus life in a metropolis.

Happy to school

All I could ever hope for is Duke University. That really epitomizes the "work hard, play hard" philosophy that elite colleges frequently pursue. Even though you'll have a lot of schooling to complete over the week, it's simple to keep focused because all of your friends are putting in similar amounts of effort. Many events taking place on and around campus on the weekends provide a great way to unwind. The combination of demanding academics and traditional college fun strikes the perfect balance.

Good schooling

Living, eating, learning, and developing who you want to be as an adult are all fantastic at Duke. I participated in student athletics, and I couldn't have asked for a better interaction with the faculty and other students. I appreciate all of the help I get from the Duke community more than anything. Furthermore, the teachers take the time to get to know you, and the lectures are diverse and demanding (if you do the same). I'd give it a 10 out of 10.

Beautiful School, Nice Classes

DU remains one the greatest and best universities that I have ever stepped in. The school is beautiful and neat. The classes are spacious and also very nice. I enjoyed attending my Lectures in those lecture halls. I also loved the Lecturers because of the good work they did. The university also has very good dorms that are given to students on first come first serve basis and they are affordable

Amazing experience

I received my B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Global Health with a minor in Chemistry from Duke University. I was able to grow as a student, scientist, and global health advocate with the help of my friends, professors, and other mentors I met along the way. A lot to learn if you look and ask, a great place to learn for those who want to learn.

whirlwind of growth and change

An amazing 2 years, with covid and everything else happening Duke has been a place of growth for me. The courses , classes were one of a kind, online and on campus. But the valuable lessons learned in the classes are irreplicable. The students are amazing here, so much diversity , I had no problem fitting in. The teachers are down right brilliant and so helpful. Don't be afraid to ask them anything. Graduated with my MBA with Duke and now my future awaits.

The university campus is awesome

I graduated with a masters degree in Religious Studies from Duke University. One thing I really liked about the university is its huge campus. It is spread in a large area with a lot of greenery and also have the facilities of reading rooms for single person also. My department building was very well taken care of. The library is immensely populated with books for all your needs. The faculty is very nice to students. The classes are equipped with latest technology to cater the needs of students. The University also provides room rentals for international students. They are very well maintained and priority is given to the International students for a comfortable stay there. There are weekly events conducted by the University as well as Student clubs for the entertainment of students. Anybody can take part in them and show their talents. I enjoyed my degree and I graduated in 2021 and was very happy that I had graduated from a reputed University.
