The Cascadilla Gorge bordering Cornell University's campus has been the scene of many a student's suicidal plunge over the last couple of decades. The university recently began monitoring each student's risk weekly and aims to inform parents if there are anydoubts about their offspring's mental health.

Graduate students are more likely to commit suicide than peers of the same age who are not in education. And among them, business students are the most endangered species.

Based on suggestions from student counselors at the Florida Institute of Technology, here are a few ways to ward off those dark moods.

  • Exercise more and try to get over your eating disorder
  • Study art instead of business or science
  • Have lots of friends
  • Don't get disappointed or angry and, most importantly, don't fail your degree. Frustration increases your risk of committing suicide
  • If you're Asian or Hispanic there isn't a lot you can do about it, but if you're an international student go home
  • If you're male, try changing your gender
  • Do something spirit-lifting during the spring and summer months: statistically, they have the highest rates of suicide
