MBAs might cover aspects of law early-on in the course of their business studies, for example in discussing the effects of regulation on price elasticity or competition. At BPP Business School, we have established a new informal society for all students (business, law, finance and accounting) called the 'BPP Legal Awareness Society' to allow fortnightly-meetings where we look at the world of commercial law in a structured manner.

Commercial lawyers, themselves trained in a different specialised route, are practising lawyers, who need to have a very sharp understanding of the business aspriations of their clients. This very often means establishing professional relationships over a period of considerable time, solving disputes as they come along, but often anticipating new ideas or solutions as they might arise. Critical to this is a thorough comprehension of the sector in which the business is operating (e.g. telecommunications), in a particular country (e.g. Thailand), at a particular level (e.g. large multi-national).

However, such commercial legal issues are not confined at all to large companies. They all are very applicable to small- and medium-sized enterprises  too. Take, for example, the role of intellectual property in copyrighting a piece of work that a business has produced, such as a book on managerial decision-making for the MBA. Or, perhaps, the notion that businesses should be aware of the environment in which they are operating, and should be socially aware (corporate social responsibility).

We have fortnightly meetings to discuss a rolling programme of ten commercial legal topics, intended for a purely business audience. It seems appropriate that students of different disciplines should be encouraged to exchange ideas, in much the same way that these people work with each other at a professional level.

The meetings are intended to be a social hub too, where students can make contacts with one another, helpful for their business, or with guest speakers. We have a website which contains educational videos about these topics which provide a basic entry-level tutorial. They should also be useful revision for aspiring commercial lawyers. We ask all our members at BPP to join through our own online system, "the VLE Blackboard", but we strongly encourage people from outside BPP to get involved. This could be in a number of ways:
