The telecommunications industry is undergoing dramatic change; this change is fuelled by advances in technology, regulatory reform, new forms of competition, and increasingly sophisticated customer needs. Industry convergence is bringing together information, computing and telecommunications to form new business models around ICT. This is something business leaders need to be aware of and to understand.
Every aspect of business life has been transformed by telecommunications, digital networked services and the Internet. Indeed, certain industries have been transformed entirely by the new technologies; they rely on their telecommunication networks and services to reach their customers, fulfil orders, design new products, develop their market etc.
In addition, many individual consumers now use the Internet to shop, work, stay in touch, email friends and family, and enjoy online entertainment.
Ian Morfett, from Imperial College Business School has over 35 years experience in the industry, and was employed with BT. He has a clear view of the industry and says that he "teaches an understanding of the underlying technologies – both as they operate today and as they will develop in the future... and examines developing customer needs."
He is the co-author of the Imperial Distance Learning MBA, along with Prof. Andy Valdar, who also worked for BT after joining as a graduate executive engineer in 1969.
At one time companies had to deal with setting up networks for a range of devices that was very limited, in recent years, there's been an explosion of different types and IT departments have faced the challenge of having to integrate these seamlessly into their networks.
Increasingly, workers fulfil parts of their roles from home and whilst on the move, and they need to do so without barriers and issues arising. Telecommunications is now such an integral part of any business, managers need to examine market developments such as globalisation, convergence and commoditisation whilst looking at the impact of these technologies on products, services and customer care.
We often take for granted how easily (most of the time) we can communicate with those we need to and have little understanding of what is required for that to happen. Telecommunication is only going to become ever increasingly entwined within our lives.
Guy Bullen, Program Director for Research at BT describes the importance and potential of the Telecoms industry as "the catalyst for profound societal change, already demonstrated over the last 20 years."
Telecoms definitely a booming industry! Sounds like a great basis for a distance MBA. Everything's going mobile now... I can't imagine the world in 20 years time?!
