The City of Amsterdam is a city with great ambition: to become a major European business center. In 2017, 143 foreign companies chose to settle in Amsterdam, with an expected surge in job opportunities to follow over the next three years.

With this global business environment in mind, Nyenrode Business Universiteit has this year re-vamped its Master of Science (MSc) in Management program offering two study locations; the central university campus in Breukelen and a brand-new campus location in Amsterdam.

As cities increasingly become hubs for international talents, Nyenrode will be playing a part in shaping the workforce of tomorrow in Amsterdam. Kicking off in August 2018, new MSc in Management students will choose from three specialist tracks; digital business & innovation, global strategies & sustainability, and financial management.

The program—ranked 57th in the Financial Times’ global Top 100 Master’s in Management ranking in 2017—will launch graduates into global business careers. Past students have landed jobs at top firms like IBM and PwC.

BusinessBecause caught up with Hetty van Roozendaal, director of Nyenrode’s MSc in Management program, to find out more.

Why have you chosen to offer the MSc in Management in Amsterdam this year?MBA_nyenrode

Offering the program in Amsterdam was a natural step for us. Our Amsterdam premises offer a unique opportunity for students to tap into a variety of networking opportunities.

Students now have the opportunity to choose between a close-knit campus environment and a cosmopolitan and international setting. In Breukelen, students can live, study and create a network of friends for life through participation in a student association rooted in Dutch business traditions. In Amsterdam, students enjoy a city experience in a small class setting with a strong international flavor.

How does the MSc in Management create job opportunities for graduates in the city?

As the economy picks up, we are seeing growing opportunities in the Amsterdam city region. Employment prospects for graduates are improving. Expanding our presence in this city by offering the MSc Management is highly beneficial for our students who will benefit from being able to both study within the tight-knit community of Nyenrode’s estate in Breukelen and better engage with local and international companies operating in Amsterdam’s vibrant business district.

The Nyenrode Company Project is one of the first steps to tap into such opportunities. Students team up to work on a real-life consultancy case with a local or international company. Being located in the heart of Amsterdam will boost this as students will be literally a few minutes away from companies such as Netflix, Travelbird, Rituals, among others.

What stands out about the specialization tracks on Nyenrode’s MSc in Management?

The digital business & innovation track originated through a joint effort between Nyenrode faculty and students. We launched a ‘Digital Business’ elective course in 2016, which brought students closer to the reality of digital transformation. Some students ended up finding jobs in this field, even before graduation. As a result, we decided to turn this course into an entire track.

During this track, students will cover topics that range from the impact of digitalization on business and society to the possibilities and threats of big data, digital business models, business intelligence and cyber security.

While the global strategies & sustainability track is the result of a redesign of our international management track. Nyenrode identified a need to tackle subjects such as competition in a global world, sustainable global value chains, new economic powers reflected in the shift from West to East, social venturing entrepreneurship, and disruptive best practices. Consequently, students will have exposure to globally active companies throughout the courses and will interact with experienced international guest lecturers.

Business schools must ensure that their students are immediately eligible for the job market as soon as they graduate. Thanks to these developments within our program, we are further preparing students for rewarding careers.

Why makes Nyenrode’s MSc in Management unique?

Our MSc graduates enter the labor market as academic professionals instead of professional academics. They have a unique combination of strong academic theory from Nyenrode’s position as a research university, practical relevance through activities like the Nyenrode Traineeship, and personal development.

This places our graduates ahead in the race to make a success of business opportunities.

Great education experience in Computer Science

Computer Science at L'aquila University (L'Aquila, Italy) is one of the best for few reasons like: - young teachers extremely motivated and skilled - small campus that facilitates the learning experience, for example in some courses we were approx. 15 people maximum (in the last two years) It is important to promote quality over quantity and the fact that the campus is not over crowded make the whole education experience extremely worthy.
