Universum have today released the 2011 global talent attraction index aka “The World’s Most Attractive Employers”.

The rankings are based on global annual surveys which measure employer attractiveness to students around the world. The 161,000 students surveyed are drawn from the top universities in the world’s 12 largest economies: US, Japan, China, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Canada, Russia and India.

The Global Top 10 Business employers are ranked as such:

1. Google
2. KPMG
3. PwC
4. Ernst & Young
5. Deloitte
6. Microsoft
7. Procter & Gamble
8. J.P. Morgan
9. Apple
10. Goldman Sachs

It comes as no great surprise that Google have topped the charts for both most attractive business and engineer employers for the third year in a row.

Just behind Google, the Big Four continue to fight it out, Ernst and Young and Deloitte have switched places from last years rankings but show that all four continue to be highly appealing employers to business students. Lovisa Öhnell, head of research and consulting at Universum said the Big Four continue to be a big draw as they are known for being ‘great places to launch a career.’ But for anyone to topple Google from the pole position “it will take an exceptionally strong player with a clear talent strategy.”

Although Deloitte may be ranked the lowest of the Big Four it is the only one that makes it onto the Global Top 10 Engineer/IT employer index.

In the UK market alone, the banking industry has regained some of its appeal after a dramatic fall during times of economic uncertainty. However, globally banks face a mixed reception and J.P. Morgan is the only bank of the eight in the Business index that has climbed up the ranking.

Given the influence that America wields over the world it is unsurprising that American multinationals govern both the business index. Of the 50 companies in the index 28 companies have their headquarters in America, Germany have 14 and in third place is the Netherlands with three.

The Global Marketing Director at Universum, Cecilia Dahlström, says the most attractive attribute a company can offer is work/life balance. “There’s a generational gap – while baby boomers and the generation X were highly focused on working hard to achieve materials gains, generation Y is looking for a more balanced life while still wanting to achieve these gains. They seem to be aspiring for what their parents missed.”
