Before pursuing an MBA, Caroline Polales spent almost half a decade devoting herself to mental health care in the US state of Pennsylvania. It was a formative experience—one that taught her how to deal with both individuals and organizations.

Caroline built upon that experience during a two-year full-time MBA at Temple University’s Fox School of Business, concentrating on healthcare management. Her MBA at Fox opened a path for her to land a job at Veralon – a Philadelphia-based healthcare consulting firm – which she secured after a successful summer internship there last year.

Caroline’s performance during the internship led to a part-time position during the final year of her MBA studies. She then successfully juggled this job with classwork, and will transition into a full-time role at Veralon in July this year.

Caroline is one of many Fox MBAs who are transforming opportunities given to them by the school into full-time jobs. In 2016, 100% of students on Fox’s two-year Global MBA were hired within three months of leaving the program. Around 25% went into the healthcare industry.

BusinessBecause caught up with Caroline to find out more.

How did Fox help you land your post-MBA job?

During our internship search at the beginning of first year, I met with the director of the healthcare management concentration, Dr. Stuart Fine. He played an integral role in connecting me both with the consulting firm, as well as other internship opportunities. He helped set up days for me to shadow executives at Penn Medicine, and a long-term care facility.

I knew at the start of the program that I was interested in pursuing consulting, so when Dr. Fine sent me the application for the healthcare consulting firm and I was asked to interview, I jumped at the chance.

How has the Fox MBA prepared you for your current role?

Some of the biggest challenges I face revolve around client management. Clients often have specific expectations for the result of an engagement, and hard deadlines in mind. However, when the successful completion of a project requires data provided by the client, it can be difficult to get what's needed and turn it around in the time allotted.

The Enterprise Management Consulting course (EMC) at Fox prepared me for just this challenge. In the course, valuable leadership skills were learned and practiced to both manage client expectations and put the right amount of pressure and responsibility on them to get us what was needed to do our jobs well. I rely on the skills learned in that course almost every day.

Why did you decide to pursue an MBA at Fox?

I knew that I wanted to pursue a healthcare management track, and the reputation of the MBA program, paired with the dual accreditation of the healthcare management program specifically, drew me to Fox – not many programs across the country are dually accredited.

Healthcare management aside, I was also impressed with Fox's position in the MBA rankings. The global immersions during each year of business school were also a huge draw, and distinguished the program from others. Having the opportunity to not only learn about global business in a classroom, but to actually get to immerse yourself in different cultures and business environments for a month made Fox my first choice.

What advice do you have for prospective Fox MBAs?

I would advise prospective Fox MBAs to take an honest inventory of their strengths and weaknesses so that they choose a program and course load that will challenge them to grow areas of weakness into strengths.

Fox has highly dedicated and impressive faculty that are willing to go above and beyond to help the students become management professionals, but it is up to each student to reach out and take advantage of all the resources available.
