  • Turners PPL was a start up company that offered independent service provision for the fresh produce (food) sector incorporating Packing, storage, order picking and overall product management from port to end client.
  • Established the business in 2001 to offer an operational and management service for the fresh produce industry, the company was built on a least cost model that allowed for maximum focus in the fast moving, highly perishable world of fresh produce. Aggressively grew the business by actively soliciting new business whilst ensuring existing clients received maximum focus.
  • As one of three partners was pivotal in the continued success of the venture and as joint managing director controlled the business on a day-to-day basis, managed and motivated in excess of 250 to 300 staff.
  • Increased sales by promoting the highest standards of client care and recognising potential development and training opportunities. Key drivers were service level and cost efficiencies.
  • Achieved very high profit margins through constant analysis of all the financial aspects of the cost chain.
  • After five years the business handled in excess of nine million cartons per annum and grew to be the largest company in the third party service sector, turning over in excess of £10m per annum.
  • Delivered major savings through increased critical mass, increased service level and shortening the supply chain.
  • By year 5 delivered substantial profits.
  • Established a subsidiary in the Czech Republic offering an operational service for the suppliers of Tesco Eastern Europe. Driven by Tesco, to offer its suppliers a UK type operational near its Eastern Europe distribution centres, allowing for just in time replenishment. Main advantages included increased service level and quality management.

  • The role ensured complete control from marketing strategies, product procurement, new product development, account management, profit and loss accountability through to the end user.
  • Travelled extensively around Europe and Central America negotiating programme of supplies and payment terms. Enjoyed interactions with different working methods and cultures. Due to the fast moving environment of the fresh produce world an ability to plan and think on the move was paramount for success.
  • Built up strong relationships with produce technologists to expand into new product areas and capitalise on opportunities.
  • Built strong working relationships with customers such as Tesco, Asda and Morrison’s. Established and controlled a £10m multi product range.
