Why was the club set up?
The UCLA Anderson Soccer Club (ASC) is an organization centered on the love of the “World’s Game” — soccer. The club is not merely a group of soccer players: it is a collection of students representing the international diversity of UCLA Anderson. Players come from a variety of countries including Argentina, Brazil, England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the United States. It is the love of soccer that brings members together and provides a common outlet to complement the academic and professional experiences at Anderson.
What proportion of UCLA: Anderson MBA students are in the club?
The ASC is one of the largest non-professional clubs on campus, with over 70 members. ASC represents roughly a tenth of the full-time student body.
Is the club just for men or are there women as well? If there are women do you play in mixed teams or single sex teams?
The ASC is for both men and women, and we routinely have women at our practices and matches. We don't play in designated mixed teams or single sex teams, if any one of our female members is available and willing to play in a match we will play with them on the squad.
How often does the club meet?
Depending on the academic schedule the club meets anywhere from once to twice a week. We have routine practice sessions every Friday, and will play in friendly matches and tournaments on the weekends when our academics permit.
Does the UCLA: Anderson Soccer Club play other teams or is it just a social club?
While the club serves as a social club where students can meet other players who share their passion for soccer, the club is very competitive. There are a variety of international MBA soccer tournaments held across the country with MBA squads from the USA, Canada, England, France, Mexico, and Spain coming to represent their respective schools. UCLA Anderson hosts one such tournament, and also travels to the University of Texas -- Austin, and Stanford University for other major tournaments.
With such busy schedules doing an MBA, is it difficult to find time to play soccer?
With the stress of academics, recruiting, and interviews the club's weekly practice sessions provide a welcome respite from the hectic schedule of an MBA student. The robust showing each week is a testament not only to the passion for soccer of each of the members, but also of the camaraderie and spirit that the members enjoy with each other through the matches and tournaments they participate in throughout the year.
What is the most widely supported Champions League/Premier League club team within the Soccer Club?
The diverse nature of the club lends many answers to that question: AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea to name a few. It's difficult to name one team, and one that no matter the answer, some of my fellow teammates would be very unhappy. That being said, I personally think the only answer to that question is Real Madrid. The club actually organizes a variety of events to watch major tournament games, and derby matches throughout the year depending on the state of international soccer.
