Business school can be life-changing, equipping you with the skills, experience, and mindset essential for pursuing your dreams. However, a premium education comes at a cost that is not affordable for everyone. In fact, according to the latest Prospective Student Survey by GMAC, nearly half of global candidates cited cost as the top barrier to pursuing a business degree.

That’s where scholarships come in—designed to make high-quality education more accessible. Usually awarded on merit or need, they offer vital financial support to many students.

But scholarships go far beyond financial aid. With the budgetary burden eased, they also empower students to follow their passions, excel educationally, and make the most of their time at business school.

We spoke with Yashvi Chhedha, an MBA student majoring in finance at FLAME University in Pune, India, to find out how receiving a full-fee waiver transformed her academic journey.

A scholarship that signalled belief

Scholarships can open doors for students, providing them with the financial means to pursue their education.

For Yashvi (pictured right), the moment she received her scholarship from FLAME University will forever be ingrained in her memory, for its life-changing impact: “I was sitting in my home in Mumbai when the letter came in. There was a mix of disbelief, a lot of relief, and definitely gratitude.”

However, scholarships extend far beyond financial support. Receiving one can offer a genuine confidence boost—serving as an indication of your capabilities and validating your decision to pursue a business education. It signifies that the institution believes in your abilities enough to invest in you.

“It felt very validating—like someone was saying, ‘we see your effort, we see your potential, and we believe in you,’” she says.

For merit-based scholarship recipients like Yashvi, this feeling is particularly profound. At FLAME University, these scholarships are awarded to top-performing candidates based on overall scores and can range from partial to full-fee waivers.

“To me, scholarships signal something deeper—it’s not just financial support. It’s a commitment to rewarding merit and recognizing potential,” adds Yashvi.

At FLAME University, merit awards such as the one Yashvi received upon admission are also granted to enrolled students who rank in the top 5% of their batch with a minimum CGPA of 8.5. Achieving such an award can be highly motivational, reassuring students that their progress and dedication throughout their studies are being recognized and valued.

Freedom to learn without limits

With the estimated total cost of studying for an MBA at a top private business school in India reaching as much as INR 40 lakh, having the financial pressure reduced, or even completely eliminated, can be transformative.

By removing the invisible weight of financial stress, scholarships give students the freedom to fully engage, both professionally and personally, with business school, enabling immense personal growth.

“I don’t have to balance opportunities against affordability. I simply choose anything and everything that would help me grow,” says Yashvi.

At FLAME University, need-based scholarships are also offered in the form of emergency tuition aid for students facing financial hardship due to unforeseen personal or family circumstances. This ensures that these recipients can experience business school to the fullest, without compromise.

With less time spent worrying about finances, students gain the mental space to explore everything on campus. For Yashvi, her scholarship has given her the confidence and flexibility to contribute consistently to campus life, taking on roles as vice president of FLAME University and president of the FLAME Business and Consulting Group.

“Financial pressure can be invisible—it quietly shapes what you commit to and how boldly you participate.

“Being able to take on leadership roles without worrying about finances made it possible for me to show up wholeheartedly,” she adds.

Business school is so much more than just the curriculum; it’s about embracing everything your school has to offer. At FLAME University, students can choose from more than 40 extracurricular clubs, covering areas such as cricket, rugby, dance, history, and even astronomy. The university also offers several study abroad opportunities, giving students first-hand experience of how business operates around the world.

Yet, for many students who must take on part-time or full-time work to fund their studies, these experiences outside the classroom can feel out of reach. However, with reduced financial strain, scholarship recipients are free to seize these opportunities.

“The scholarship gave me independence. I didn’t have to choose between academics and extracurriculars—I could do both, with true intention,” says Yashvi, who has participated in several of FLAME University’s student clubs as well as the South Korea Global Immersion Program, all free of charge.

FLAME University also offers special scholarships for sports achievers who secure top positions in state, national, or international tournaments recognized by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)—allowing them to pursue their extracurricular passions alongside their studies.

Accountability and paying it forward

Scholarships can be highly effective in fostering a sense of accountability—an essential quality for success in the business world, particularly in leadership roles where you’re responsible not only for yourself but for others.

Being chosen by your school for a financial award that lasts the full duration of your studies gives you an amplified sense of awareness about how you show up and maintain the standards you’ve already set for yourself, explains Yashvi.

“When an institution believes in you at that level, you naturally want to live up to that belief. It gives you encouragement and accountability—you want to keep doing better,” she says.

At FLAME University, this lesson in accountability is instilled from day one. Scholarship recipients are required to assist different departments and participate in scholarship activities to maintain their funding, helping them grow into well-rounded professionals who make the most of the opportunities they’ve been given.

Armed with a deeper understanding of accountability, students often feel inspired to extend the same support they have received to others.

“I’m far more conscious now of paying opportunities forward. I hope to contribute and continue to give back by mentoring future students and sharing my experiences,” says Yashvi, who is excited about becoming an active and supportive member of the FLAME University alumni community when she graduates in six months’ time.

This spirit of generosity is also vital for nurturing the ethical, responsible business leaders of tomorrow, an aim that is integral to FLAME University's liberal education model, which emphasizes a multidisciplinary learning experience spanning physical education, the fine and performing arts, the humanities, and the social and natural sciences to develop versatile, principled leaders.

Ultimately, it’s clear that scholarships, such as those offered by FLAME University, are far more than just financial aid; they’re about unlocking potential. As Yashvi notes, “The scholarship has been a catalyst—it's given me the freedom to learn without hesitation, the confidence to lead without second-guessing, and the space to discover who I can be.”
