This has coincided with a drop in preferences for finance placements. IIM Indore, which ranked eighth in the best management schools in India according to the NIRF ranking 2024, was previously renowned for securing placements in the financial sector.
Consulting has been on the rise for a number of years, however, accounting for a record 35% of total recruitments this year—a 10% increase from last year’s placement season.
Meanwhile, a quarter (25%) of placements were secured within the general management, human resources, and operations sector, which shared the top spot with consulting in 2024.
Sales and marketing roles reduced from 19% of recruitments in 2024 to 13% this year, while opportunities within the IT sector fell from 12% to 10%.
The finance sector, which once led student preferences at IIM Indore, saw its lowest share in the institute’s history. Dropping 5% from last year, companies within the finance sector recorded just 14% of recruitments.
Historically, finance placements dominated at IIM Indore, attracting 26% of students in 2016, compared to 22% in consulting. The shift began in 2017, with consulting opportunities overtaking finance by just 1%, attracting 28% of students.
Finance roles largely retained the top spot from 2018 to 2021, except in 2019, when consulting firms once again led recruitment by a single percentage point. In 2022, the consulting sector took an 11% lead over finance when it came to placing students. The following year, this position was strengthened with 29% of placements being in consulting, compared to 19% in finance.
