Birmingham Business School’s Online MSc International Business is the perfect platform for careers on a global stage.
And it’s entirely online. A pioneer of educational technology, the UK school’s Online MSc offers students in the early stages of their career an interactive, multicultural virtual learning experience, which both reflects and goes beyond that of traditional classroom-based courses.
“[We have] everything you would find in an onsite program,” says Danish MSc student Helena Feibert.
That includes; interactive group work, expert-led video content, support from a personal tutor and careers service, as well as lectures and real-life case studies delivered through fully-synchronous online classes.
“[The Online MSc has] helped me understand what drives organizations and how this can be linked across markets,” Helena explains.
“[And already] it has provided me with insight into some of the aspects that make up a good leader, and not just a good manager.”
The 30-month program brings young professionals from all over the world together, providing them with the skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly competitive international business environment.
Crucially, the online program gives students the flexibility to work and study at the same time. Topics covered include finance, operations, marketing, human resources and globalization. And Helena, who works as a senior consultant for growing international jewelry manufacturer and retailer Pandora, is able to apply her learning on a daily basis.
Helena has worked for a number of global organizations in a variety of industries; shipping, pharma and luxury. But her career ambition – to become an international business leader – is clear, and the Online MSc is the ideal launch-pad to help her achieve her goal.
“It will certainly add some substance to my resume which will allow me to maneuver more easily in a global context,” she says.
While flexibility is one advantage of an online business degree, another is class diversity. Across Birmingham Business School’s Online MSc International Business and AMBA-accredited Online MBA combined, 63% of students are international, 47% are women, and the courses are comprised of 86 different nationalities.
Jamaican Online MSc student Safiya Carroll was attracted by the University of Birmingham’s strong reputation and rankings worldwide. Part of the Russell Group, the university is renowned for its high standard of research facilities and staff.
While her work, and the cost of studying abroad, prevented Safiya from moving to the UK, the Online MSc offers an accessible and affordable long-distance learning alternative.
“[The Online MSc] will provide me with the right tools I need to position myself in a competitive global environment,” says Safiya.
“[And] the scope of such a degree is amazing. I can work in marketing, imports and exports, finance, logistics and entrepreneurship, to name just a few.”
Even thousands of miles away across the Atlantic, Safiya feels a strong affinity to the school.
“From the very first day, the academic advisors display a keen interest in your performance,” she says. “Regardless of the physical distance, the service is personable: no student is treated like ‘just a number’.”
While combining work and study can be a challenge, the rewards are clear to see. Working as an investment advisor for a stockbroking firm in Kingston, Jamaica, Safiya has already employed the lessons learnt through the Online MSc to contribute to her own company’s growth.
“Enrolling in this course is worth 100% of the investment that you will make,” she says. “The program has made me more effective in my work environment. And my insight on life and the world in general has changed.”
