In the second article of a series, Isha Agarwal speaks to MBA students who have just started their programs at business schools in the UK  the second most popular MBA destination.

“I can summarize my personal experience at Henley in three words: engaging, enriching, excellent,” says Nitesh Agrawal, a new MBA candidate at Henley Business School in the UK.

Getting back into full-time education can be a challenge, and it is quite easy to get lost in the crowd and lose focus. But business schools in the UK have placed great importance on helping students settle in – by creating a holistic and motivating educational experience.

Mbalenhle Mbatha, also of Henley, is particularly impressed with her experience on the MBA program so far: “What distinguishes the Henley MBA program from others is the unrelenting focus on the individual development journey, the precision in selecting current and topical management topics, the challenging academic content, and most importantly the genuine sense of community,” she says.

Marlon Velloza, from Lancaster University Management School, expresses a similar opinion. His first few days at Lancaster, though intense, have helped him see the end result of the MBA degree, and the steps he needs to take to get there.

He has been charmed by the beauty and peacefulness of the business school’s campus – helping to support the learning process.

Marlon says: When I arrived I was greeted with a campus that is tranquil as well as scenic, which is a major factor in its conductivity to learning. I was surprised when I entered my accommodation for the first time. The room was more than what I expected, and very comfortable.”

Lancaster, a sprawling campus across 360 acres of parkland, offers an active social life and facilities for students to unwind, but is peaceful enough not to hamper the learning process.

International students in particular have multiple reasons to travel from other countries to pursue an MBA in the UK.

Mireille Moukarzel, an MBA student at the University of Bath School of Management, is extremely excited for the year ahead. “Choosing the University of Bath to pursue my MBA was the perfect decision,” she says. “I was seeking an international and diverse MBA program, and was pleased to meet recruits of different backgrounds and nationalities.”

She is looking forward to sharing her expertise with classmates – “and in return get introduced to my classmates’ rich and diverse” backgrounds.

Ural Arslangulov decided to pursue his MBA at Henley based on his background in the construction industry, and is not disappointed by the experience so far. “They have expertise in this sector,” he says.

He says that Henley has a huge alumni network. “My classmates are very professional people [and are] very interesting to study [with] and share information [with],” adds Ural. He has been motivated to start planning his future career already.

Andrea Schmetz’s experience at Lancaster has also been positive so far, mainly because of the support she received as a member of the Lancaster community. “The first week has already given me a myriad of impressions and a lot of food for thought,” she says.

“What really stood out for me was the way we are treated by everyone. People here are interested in your opinion and point of view, and you are encouraged to participate in your own way.

“If you need help, someone will be there for you. It makes you want to contribute that much more and, since everybody is treated that way, [we] work really well as a team.”

James Samson, though already from the UK, decided to pursue his MBA at Bath after 17 years in industry. It was not an easy decision. “It meant... No income,” he says.

He chose Bath because he was struck by the level of pastoral care married into the academic rigour. “I am only three weeks in and it has been the best choice I have made in a very long time,” James says. “I am happy and challenged and feel I am learning so much from the university and my colleagues. Being [located] in Bath is the icing on the cake.”

With these endorsements, it is no wonder that UK is still one of the most popular MBA destinations. The facilities, support and the networks gained at these UK business schools greatly enhances the personal and professional development of the students – and make for an engaging and refreshing educational experience.
