London’s Imperial College Business School is launching a new MSc in Economics and Strategy for Business. The program will be launched in 2012 and is designed for business graduates who want to understand and apply strategic economic thinking to the modern firm or organisation.

The program’s approach will emphasise the application of theory to the realities facing managers. It will offer modules on innovation, globalisation, and digital and energy economics. Dr Anjali Bakhru, the Program Director, said: “This unique combination of strategy and economics provides a valuable platform for recent graduates to consider and pursue a more generalist path in business over the course of their careers.”

There's a growing need for analytical thinking with a strategic focus in management consultancy, policy analysis, the financial services and big corporates. The program spans both economics and strategy: “Students will be exposed to a broad range of economic and strategic thinking from corporate governance and financial risk, to energy economics, strategy innovation and implementation.”

The ultimate goal of the new MSc is to ensure that students develop, “An analytical toolkit which can be effectively applied to a wide variety of situations.”

What would you say is the advantage of this type of Masters programme over going straight into a job for hands-on experience? Thanks!

Hi Melanie, there's a few advantages apart form the knowledge/education skills you'll gain: *supplement to an arts, science or social science education, teaching you skills that can be applied in the workplace right away. *buys you more time to do an internship or find a job: you can apply for another round of many graduate training schemes when you finish. *gives you the chance to expand your network & meet others from different backgrounds *the careers teams at business schools are very motivated on finding jobs and projects for their students. *gives you longer to work out what sort of career path you'd like to take!
