Nanyang Business School On A Roll As It Wins International Case Competition

Winners of the prestigious competition get job and internship offers from global companies.

Nanyang Business School scored a major victory on the international business case competition circuit when it won this year’s McGill Management International Case Competition, one of the most prestigious case competitions in the world.

It was the first time Nanyang had been invited to the competition, but a team of four undergraduate students beat rivals from 10 other top business schools, including University of Manchester, Georgetown University, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, to take the trophy.

Their success follows hot on the heels of a team of Nanyang MBAs who were second runners up in last year’s John Molson International Case Competition. They were the first Asian team ever to make the finals.

Beyond the silverware, the team also caught the eye of several global organizations, such as mining giant Rio Tinto, bagging invitations for jobs and internships.

Team member Kanesh Bala, said: “It was incredible to be headhunted by prestigious global organizations. I enjoyed the opportunity to actively network in a focused environment with business leaders and other competitors.”

It was a hard fought victory for the Nanyang team: with two team mates on exchange at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, Skype was employed to overcome the separation of geography and time.

“The judges acknowledged that we had the most all rounded and well-packaged solution. This, to me, was most gratifying, as our hard work was recognized and rewarded. I believe my team has learnt a lot from one another and also from the many international friends we have made”, said Tan Sing Nan, another participant.

In the seven weeks leading up to the competition in Montreal, Canada, the Nanyang team trained every weekend, holing themselves up in 15-hour video conferences each time. Aiding them in their preparations were Nanyang professors Edwin Tan and Lee Gilbert.

During the competition, teams were given 24 hours to find solutions to a business problem and prepare a presentation of their findings.

Lau Seo Wang is really proud of the result of his team: “It is an achievement to receive the strong endorsement of the global business leaders who were present at the competition.”

For Xu Wei the competition is also a great opportunity to enlarge his network: “This has been a valuable learning experience and a good opportunity to expand my global network.”

Congratulations to Nanyang’s victorious undergrads. The pressure is in the MBAs to win an international competition now too!
