Colombian Paula Bejarano relocated from an engineering job at Royal Dutch Shell in the Netherlands to pursue the Full-time MBA at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.

Since landing in Washington DC, she’s used the school’s network to secure part-time fall and spring internships at startup incubator 1776 and venture capital firm NextGen. This past summer, she interned at disruptive car firm Tesla in San Francisco’s Silicon Valley.

“I benefited from the school's network as I met Georgetown alumni who were entrepreneurs or work in the tech space,” she says. “They helped me navigate my way around San Francisco, introduced me to their professional network, and gave me career advice.”

Alumni volunteering as a career resource is a reflection of Georgetown’s ‘Hoyas Helping Hoyas’ ethos, according to Shelly Heinrich, interim associate dean of MBA Admissions. “Once you join the network of 178,000 alumni; you’re a part of the Georgetown community for life,” she says.

Indeed, when Paula started applying for internships, the career coaches at McDonough helped her refine her priorities, and manage the expectations of potential employers.

“In the end, I found an ideal summer internship,” Paula continues. “One that encompassed my main interests and post-MBA goals—energy, sustainability, tech, and entrepreneurship.”

Of McDonough's graduating class of 2017, 99% of MBA students seeking an internship received an offer. 88% of internships were paid; 68% were facilitated by the school. Top McDonough MBA employers include multinational, Fortune 500 firms like Amazon, American Express, and IBM.

Paula has embraced McDonough’s global focus. As the school’s Latin American Business Association president, she (together with the executive board) organized a career trek to Mexico City in May, with 17 students visiting top recruiters and networking with senior executives from Goldman Sachs and McKinsey.

For Chen Chen, a Chinese entrepreneur who started his own visual marketing firm in Shanghai prior to his MBA, it was the McDonough MBA’s international focus that made the school stand out.

McDonough boasts a network of over 23,000 engaged alumni extended globally. This year, Full-time and Evening McDonough MBA students worked on 73 consulting projects across four continents—in countries like China, India, and the UAE—for the school’s flagship Global Business Experience (GBE).

Determined to enter the tech industry, Chen Chen secured an internship at Amazon in Japan this summer.

“The large number of international students at McDonough allowed me to expand my network all over the world while studying in the US,” he explains. “McDonough has an outstanding alumni network in the tech industry. I relied exclusively on this powerful network, and I was never rejected by anyone to whom I reached out.”

Chen Chen knows employer demand for MBAs with big data analytics skills is huge. According to a Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF) and PwC report, data analytics jobs postings will reach 2.7 million by 2020. 70% of business leaders in the United States will prefer job applicants with data analytics skills by 2021. McDonough offers core and elective courses in data mining and business analytics.

“Data analytics is at the core of my career switch into the tech industry,” Chen Chen explains. “I need a comprehensive skillset upgrade and more practical experience at a high level. Georgetown’s emphasis on data-driven decision making meets my needs.

“Different than other MBA programs, McDonough’s curriculum also focuses more on cultivating a student’s global vision and encouraging them to view the world from diverse perspectives,” he continues. “With the wave of globalization, such courses will benefit me tremendously in my future career.”

Daniel Jenks, an avid surfer previously employed in digital content development for the World Surf League, agrees. With minimal technology experience, he was offered a summer business development internship at Salesforce based in San Francisco.

“Georgetown's emphasis on conducting business in the global marketplace made it my ideal fit,” he says.

“Without sounding cliché, Georgetown McDonough has been everything,” Daniel continues. “I have a diverse work history which was very hard to showcase on paper.

“The McDonough MBA curriculum, the MBA Career Center coaching, the clubs, the events throughout the D.C. area, and exposure to business leaders have given me the confidence to advance my career knowing that I can add value to any organization.”
