Jevan’s primary business provides personal protection equipment to construction industry personnel in South Africa. As his business grew, Jevan sought further business education to help him through the growth process.
But with his time a precious commodity, he found that most MBA programs didn’t offer the flexibility he needed—that was until he came across the International Flex EMBA at MIP.
MIP’s online Executive MBA program is developed with Microsoft technology and run in partnership with the World Of Business Ideas (WOBI)—a global business content hub, where leading industry figures share their knowledge and insight online. The program’s 20-month, distance-learning, Executive MBA format, means students can attend classes when and how they like.
For Jevan, it was the perfect option. As an entrepreneur, he was able to implement what he learned directly into his business.
BusinessBecause caught up with Jevan to find out more.
Why did you decide to pursue the International Flex EMBA at MIP?
I was looking for a global point of view. Being able to go to Italy, and on two other elective weeks, with opportunities to go to Silicon Valley, Shanghai, and London gives you that. For me, an EMBA is also about networking and the International Flex EMBA at MIP has a huge alumni network with global reach.
Finally, I wanted to go to a European school to hear from the best at what they do. MIP was ranked in the top 100 programs in the Financial Times rankings and this puts me at a high level, which I can then apply to my company.
What attracted you to an online EMBA program?
For me, studying online was a no-brainer. On the International Flex EMBA, if I plan my time well, I can take one or two hours out of my day to watch a lecture on a platform and be up-to-date in the class.
In December last year, I went to an area that was remote and downloaded the lectures. I don’t know why anyone would do a normal course as opposed to an online one. If you’re working, why would you?
Online, we always have the university in contact with us and we’re able to access live streaming events. The class is spread across Europe. We are all in a chat group together and we meet and connect in multiple cities and at alumni events on a global scale.
Through WOBI, you also get content from world leaders. We had a talk the other night from the CEO of BMW Italy. The opportunity to get insight from leading figures in industry is exceptional.
How are you applying your MBA learnings in your everyday work?
The International Flex EMBA at MIP has had a huge impact. The first course we did was organization design and, as a company, we’ve been growing exponentially and had to restructure. This course gave me so much insight in how to do this. Process engineering was a huge element and I had literally been trying to work out how to reengineer our processes.
Another thing it’s taught is the difference between a leader and a manager. It helped me realize how good management skills can help get more out of your staff than before.
What advice do you have for anyone considering an Executive MBA?
You’ve got to be committed. Discuss it with your family as the degree will have an impact on your family life. If all those things are in order, then go for it.
Lots of people look at the money, but I’d say you can’t put a price on your education. You’re only going to be bettering yourself and if you better yourself then you can better society.
