As one of the world’s largest economies, China offers a wide array of job opportunities in a variety of industries, including innovative sectors like fintech and AI.

MBA graduates from Peking University’s (PKU) Guanghua School of Management are familiar with the huge range of job opportunities in China. Recent grads have joined global companies like BNP Paribas, McKinsey, and Huawei, while others have pursued positions at organizations like the United Nations.

Over half of PKU MBAs settle in Beijing after graduation and a growing number are entering the fast-growing Chinese tech sector—22% landed jobs in tech in 2021, compared with 13.5% in 2020.

BusinessBecause caught up with Mei Liang, senior career counselor at PKU Guanghua, to find out how you can land a top job in China in 2022.

What are some of the most exciting MBA job opportunities in China?

After 44 years of reform and opening up, China's economy has continued to grow at a rapid pace. It has brought success in several important industries, and many global giant companies have emerged, like Huawei, Alibaba, and Tencent. Currently, China has successfully ranked among the world's economic powerhouses. China's diverse and booming economy has created a vast job market.

The Chinese economy is going to start recovering after the COVID-19 outbreak. There will be plenty of job opportunities in technology, biology, healthcare, big health, consumer, advanced manufacturing, and fintech.

In particular, the pandemic is forcing many industries to move in a digital direction. One of their key challenges is digital transformation. The demand for MBA graduates who are well versed in digital technologies will be high in the coming years. Thus, inter-disciplinary talents are becoming more and more popular in the jobs market.

Why is an MBA a great launchpad for these careers?

An MBA is a good point in life where you choose to start again or switch to a new career path. After an MBA education, students will obtain a newer and higher business perspective and a more complete knowledge structure. They will be more innovative in their thinking and have the courage to break out of existing limitations.

Every MBA student wants to find that career path that suits them. By the time they graduate, they will be more clearly positioned, motivated, and passionate about their career. MBA students are self-motivated and willing to handle challenges, both complex and international, with great potential.

What skills do MBAs need to succeed in business in China?

The world political and economic order is facing unprecedented challenges in the VUCA era. The pandemic has increased the complexity and uncertainty of the external environment. The new situation requires MBAs to be extraordinarily equipped with the following core competencies.

Firstly, technology skills, including data analysis skills. Secondly, insightfulness: the ability to analyze issues in-depth, have independent judgment, and make sound decisions. Finally, the complex and comprehensive ability to respond to changes in industry and job functions.

In addition, having strong Chinese language skills and knowledge of Chinese culture, history, economics, finance, and management will help you to succeed in the Chinese business world. For the industries you're interested in, we recommend that you undertake some in-depth research on the market development of different firms across China.

How does PKU Guanghua support students looking for MBA jobs in China?

Our Career Development Center (CDC) is one of the first business school career development centers in China. We understand the rules of the talent market and are familiar with the career development trajectory of MBA students.

From the time when MBA students enter the school, the CDC initiates a more systematic career education and personalized career coaching. We aim to help students identify their goals and path from the very beginning.

We help MBAs in many ways, such as conducting one-on-one counseling, career development strategy courses, mock interviews, customized resumes, career assessments, and career competency training.

We also feature industry counseling, where we invite alumni and industry professionals to answer career questions and help students explore opportunities and paths that are right for them to achieve personalized development and growth.

Peking University is ranked 1st in China and 27th in the world. The three main spirits that drive PKUers during and after their studies here, are 1. leadership: from medicine to politics, the future leaders of China are formed here. 2. Internationalization: strong emphasis on developing a global vision for leveraging all kinds of resources both in china and abroad. 3. Tradition: do not forget your origin when moving forward.
