Business education isn’t just for early career professionals. If you've already navigated the twists and turns of climbing the corporate ladder, you understand the effort it takes. Yet, aiming for the C-suite is a whole new ball game, where even more challenges and obstacles lie ahead.

With ever-changing developments in the world of business, it can be tricky to know what skills you need to sharpen.

Executive MBA programs—or EMBAs—are geared towards business professionals with around five- to 15 years of work experience. Studied on a part-time basis in a flexible mode, these programs enable business professionals to apply their learnings to their career as they go.

From networking to leveraging technology—here are three ways an Executive MBA prepares business leaders for the C-suite.

1. You’ll gain hands-on experience in an Executive MBA

As a seasoned business professional, you’ll have plenty of experience under your belt. Yet you may have fallen into a habitual mode of doing things, which is why it’s important to refresh your learnings in an unfamiliar environment.

Budimir Sever is the vice dean of Executive MBAs at IE Business School, a school that’s based in Madrid, Spain.

“Our Executive MBA program offers fully integrated learning by doing experience,” he says.

“We use unique methodology that is based on integrated learning models, where you will not only apply concepts, tools and methodologies.”

For example, the IE Executive MBA, which can be completed in 16 or 20 months, offers several Business Sprints. These sprints allow professionals to apply their knowledge gained from EMBA topics such as strategy and financial and accounting insights to real-life business scenarios.

For students looking to advance their skills across critical thinking, creativity, and strategic thinking, the IE EMBA also offers Impact Skills Bootcamps targeted at these core areas. Students in the program are invited to test out these skills in hands-on activities.

“If you aspire to a C-level executive role, you will have a chance to experience [the role] firsthand,” says Budimir.

The Board Readiness course provides an insight into what it’s like to work as a board member, providing a supportive environment to understand boardroom dynamics, the role of the board, and how you can make a positive impact as a business leader.

As the business world undergoes rapid digital transformation, EMBA students will engage with key industry trends and learn how to leverage technology to create new business opportunities. Even the delivery of some of the lessons is inspired by disruptive technologies, with extended reality (XR) used to simulate some business challenges.

2. You’ll gain a tailored Executive MBA development plan

Not every Executive MBA student will have the same goals. Perhaps you’re looking to leap into a role in the C-suite or you might be trying to become a better business leader in your existing position.

This is why the Executive MBA at IE offers professionals a tailored development plan that you’ll work through with an executive coach in regular one-to-one sessions.

“Throughout the program, your personal executive coach will guide you to provide high relevancy for your own context,” says Budimir.

The Executive Career Transformation Plan offers EMBA students the choice of three elective tracks: Leading Business Transformation, Leading People and Organizational Transformation, or Entrepreneurial Mindset.

You’ll then have the chance to reflect on your progress in your chosen track through the Reflection Lounges with your coach, where you can explore how your learning aligns with your future goals and receive useful feedback.

“After completing the MBA, I have developed indispensable skills that have truly enhanced my profile, increasing my value in the company and the market,” says Luis Baladia Balduque, an IE Executive MBA from Spain and commercial director at L'Oréal.

3. Executive MBAs help you build a life-lasting business network

Building a business network isn’t just something that’s useful at the beginning of your career. You may have already got your foot in the door at a top company, but your network can help you to get even further.

Whether it’s calling upon a peer in a similar industry for their advice on a problem or meeting up with someone from a company you’d love to work for to glean their insights—you should never underestimate the power of your network.

IE Business School offers professionals access to a network of more than 70k alumni.

The program can be studied in a blended format or in-person classes. The blended format offers three, in-person bootcamp residential weeks—including a week in Spain’s cosmopolitan capital—where you can connect with your fellow EMBA classmates.

On average, there are more than 30 nationalities in the program with around 12 years of work experience. IE EMBA students come from globally renowned companies such as Amazon, Apple, and Deloitte.

“IE university teaches you to work and cooperate with people from different backgrounds, and to bring out the best in others,” says Dionysios Stavrakas, an IE Executive MBA from Russia.

As part of the Speaker Series, the EMBA also invites top industry experts to discuss new developments in business, with the opportunity to ask your own questions.

While you might be an expert in your domain, it’s impossible to gain a 360-degree of the ever-changing business world without leaving your comfort zone.

Executive MBA programs not only shed light on your strengths but also unveil the shadows of your weaknesses—a compass essential for navigating the journey to the summit of success.
